It was a tough job but somebody had to do it and councillor Ian Mackie (aka the Crowman) stepped forward to whittle a 130-strong field down to a top five as Thorpe’s annual scarecrow invasion hit the streets again.

After eyeing an astonishing array of all-age creativity, Ian, aided by two young helpers, decided that the best five, in no particular order were:

Gladiator (local resident); David Bowie (local resident); Polar Bear (Year 4 children at Hillside Avenue); Madder Hatter (Beauty Garden beautician); Three Chickens (St Andrews Road residents).

Highly commended were: Flower Pot People, flower, scarecrow wedding, giraffe, Hillside Pirates and the Uno Dagon.

Lisa, who organised the event along with Hannah, Clare and Emma, to raise funds for Hillside Avenue School, said: “We love seeing all ages of the community enjoying the trail. Us four mums continue to be thankful and wowed by the community effort and support.”

For the first time there was a hub at the Roxley Hall on the opening day of the trail, which spanned the May half-term holiday.

“This was a great success and it allowed the community near and wide to come and enjoy a cuppa and a rest and there were free activities for the children,” said Lisa. “Visitors commented how Thorpe is like a village within a town and how wonderful it was to see such community spirit.”

Several interactive features were introduced to the trail this year including the witches’ story in the pits, the musical wall, and how tall are you? on Thunder Lane, guess the bunny name and danger noodle rock snake outside the school.

Another hit was the take a selfie with the postbox toppers lovingly crafted by the East Thorpe National Federation WI especially for the trail.

“The whole event was amazing, thank you to everyone who took part, and especially to the organisers,” added Ian.

“Events like this help bring the community together and make Thorpe St Andrew the special place it is.”
