Norwich Exiles Men’s Hockey Club have something to celebrate, offering a moment of joy among all the recent news – not only have they come top of the league in the East Men’s Hockey 5th Division, they have done so in their centenary year.

Captain Simon Nisbet and vice-captain Sam Brewster saw the team – which has its home ground at Taverham Recreational Facility – to victory with a 21-strong squad this season, winning 17 of the 21 matches played from September through to mid-March.

Playing against 11 other teams in the league, the team scored 114 goals and gained 54 points. Only dropping nine points all season, they achieved their top place seven points clear of the second place team – having scored 35 more goals.

What was extra special was to have won the match that secured them as league champions on home soil at Taverham, where the team battled hard to win 4-3 against East Coast 2nds. Other highlights included beating rivals and renowned strong teams Pelicans and Norwich Dragons away from home, which ultimately helped lead them to victory and promotion.

Norwich Exiles were formed in 1921, boasting an extraordinary 100-year history of men’s hockey this year. Later in the year, the team have a centenary event planned, with past and present players joining together to celebrate this amazing achievement.

Meeting at TRF for training on Tuesday nights from September, Norwich Exiles are always looking for new members. Enthusiastic and friendly, the team consists of a wide range of ages, and whilst taking their sport seriously, always have fun both on and off the pitch. If you are interested in hearing more about joining the club, whatever your ability, please call Sam Brewster on 07554 706738 or email brewsts@gmail.com.
